CATRINA, THE SKULL WOMAN
In this issue of Tattoo Ideas we’ve dedicated a must-have tribute to Catrina with some amazing tattoo designs!
One of the most recognisable characters in realistic tattoos, she is now the best-loved woman in the tattoo world. She has a skull mask drawn on her face, features as a portrait on more and more people’s skin, is mainly tattooed in realistic style and is always gorgeous whether black&grey or full colour.
This tattoo is inspired by a Mexican mask for Día de Muertos, the day of the dead. In Mexico it is a huge celebration for everyone and one of the traditions is to wear skull-like make up.
The skull woman make up is a tribute to the Lady of the Dead, known to Mexicans as “la Catrina”. On her mouth and eyes she has the outlines of an actual skull, then her make up is softened with decorative elements such as an ace of spades on her nose and a keyhole or a cross on her forehead, while the rest of her face has roses, spider’s webs, floral patterns, symbols of the sun and Chicano swirls.
Always in this issue: our other features include feather designs for an increasingly popular and sought-after tattoo subject. Don’t miss it!
